Nuts and Bolts is a color-sorting puzzle where only the exposed top ring can move. The rule is simple, but each early move changes which colors are accessible later. Empty bolts act as temporary workspace. Use them to uncover buried rings, then consolidate colors so that the workspace becomes available again.
Inspect the whole stack
Before moving the first ring, look at every visible top color and note where its matching rings sit. A move that creates an immediate pair may be attractive but can bury the only route to another color. Prefer moves that both join colors and expose something useful underneath.
Protect empty workspace
An empty bolt can accept any exposed ring, making it the most flexible position on the board. Avoid filling every empty bolt with unrelated colors. Keep at least one reversible path: a ring moved into workspace should have a likely destination after one or two steps. Completed single-color bolts are valuable because they stop consuming attention and free other positions.
Undo the knot in layers
When the puzzle feels blocked, identify which ring prevents the next useful match. Work backward from that blocker rather than moving random tops. Sometimes a correct sequence temporarily separates a matching pair; that is acceptable if it reveals the ring needed to complete a different bolt. Measure progress by improved access, not only by completed stacks.

- Move blockers with a destination in mind.
- A temporary separation is useful when it opens a deeper match.
Practice one idea at a time. A short session with a clear goal is more useful than repeating moves without reviewing the result.
