See the line through the piece
For a direct pocket, imagine a line from the target piece to the center of the pocket. The striker should contact the target on the opposite end of that line. This simple ghost-line method prevents many near misses. Check for blockers along both the striker path and the target path; a clear first segment does not guarantee a clear finish.
Power changes the next position
A harder strike can open a crowded center, but it also sends pieces toward unpredictable rails. Use controlled power for clean targets and save force for deliberate breaks or long recoveries. After selecting a shot, inspect where the striker is likely to stop. Avoid trading one pocket for a foul or an unusable next position.
Use cushions as tools
Rebounds solve shots that have no direct line. Estimate equal incoming and outgoing angles, then adjust for the piece's width and the pace of the strike. A slow rebound is easier to read but may stop short; a fast rebound is less forgiving. Practice single-cushion routes before attempting complex combinations.
